Password Manager (Part 1) - Why you HAVE TO use one!!!

GOOD HABIT: Protecting yourself on the web

Not using a password manager?

YOUR PASSWORDS ARE ALREADY HACKED!

I hope that scared you… because it was meant to!

Listen… I didn’t want to make the change either.

I had my “one password to rule them all” that I used for every login too (it was “WAR MACHINE ROX”… if you know which Ironman movie that’s from, prove it by leaving a comment below 😊)

Then I attended a cyber security conference where the FBI scared me to death about how bad cybercrime is and how many hacked passwords are already on the dark web.

I switched to using a password manager that night!

I know, it’s easier just to use the same password over and over for all your logins. It’s a pain in the @ss to remember different passwords or think of difficult ones. So, what are you going to do about it?

Are you gonna keep using “Password123”? (Ooh, it’s got a capital “P”, I’m really slick!)

No! You need to work smarter, not harder!

You need to build a process around your passwords and most modern password managers make that easy. How do they do this?

They generate “crazy insane, insane crazy” hard passwords (2nd movie quote of the day, good-on-ya if you know from where… why am writing with an Australian accent all of a sudden?)

But Rob, how’my gonna remember that crazy insane password? You’re Not

Wait…WHAT!? HOW!? BUT, but…

But nothing.

Let the password manager generate AND remember the password… That’s it!

Another But. But Rob, that means I have to read this long wing-ding-a-ling ridiculous password and type it manually into sites to login?

No again! Most modern password managers have web browser add-ins that automatically enter your credentials for you… they work on smartphones too, so stop your b!tching.

OK, you sold me. So which password manager should I use?

Well, there are many out there, two that I have good experience with, and one is my favorite.

I’ve used LastPass and it’s extremely popular (www.lastpass.com) and I don’t think you can go wrong if you decide to use it.

But my preference is Enpass (www.enpass.io) and this is why:

1. Only a 1-time fee

2. No yearly subscription fee (like Last Pass)

3. Free trial to save up to 20 passwords

4. Password database is 256bit encrypted (very secure)

5. Password database can be kept in cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, Drobox, etc.)

  • 5a. All of your devices can access and sync the same database
  • 5b. If stored in the cloud, password database is synced down to each device and available while “offline” (think, on a plane)

6. “Password Pawned” feature that checks to see if one of your passwords have been discovered on the dark web (basically hacked)

7. Apps for almost every device… even Windows Phone (I used WP up until 2018 and almost cried when it wasn’t supported anymore. Go ahead, make fun of me ☹)

I hope I’ve made a good argument and convinced you to start using a password manager ASAP. If you want guidance on how to setup Enpass, check out Password Manager (Part 2) – How to setup Enpass to manager your passwords
